AFIT’s Executive Committee is pleased to announce that President Robert Vela of San Antonio College (SAC), in San Antonio, Texas, has been approved as our newest member. As part of the Alamo Colleges District, which is also an AFIT member organization, President Vela has previously been involved with AFIT, working with SAC’s sister institutions to participate in the District’s Baldrige journey.
In 2017, President Vela attended Summer Institute for the first time, an experience he described as “eye opening,” citing the value of being with like-minded people who are on a similar journey and have valuable experience and insights to share. This experience motivated Dr. Vela to pursue his own AFIT membership in order to take a deeper dive into those components of excellence within SAC.
SAC’s quality journey began in 2012 when they first applied for the Quality Texas Award. Each year, the College continues to make improvements and advance closer to the award. They are currently at the Progress Level, two levels away from the Award Level, which Dr. Vela feels has helped them lay the groundwork for beginning their own Baldrige journey in 2018. While President Vela would love for SAC to win these awards, his ultimate goal is to transform the College by making performance excellence a habit, incorporating it into every facet of the College—from facilities to instruction to student services to college services and beyond.
Please join us in welcoming President Vela and the San Antonio College team to AFIT!
